Ever lie there awake just waiting for the dreaded alarm to notify you that another day has begun, another day in that job that doesn’t give you what you need or what you want?

If you are reading this then the chances are the answer is yes, but you don’t need to feel alone as you’re one of the majority of people in the working world today.

For many of us (as I tried myself) we try to move around, find inspiration in a new job but eventually it all comes back around to the same cycle.

Whether it is the fear, that lack of knowledge or just the ease of staying where we are so many of us don’t take the time to figure out what we really want to do, and where we want to be in life. There are so many other things to think about, family, house, money, time with friends that for many of us our careers take a back seat when we think of happiness. We see a job as a way of making money to enjoy all of the above.

The main issue with that is we spend most of the hours in our lives in work! So why do we put so little focus on making it a great enjoyable place for ourselves.

I decided to look further into this on a Monday after a particularly long day at work, with the rest of the week still looming and Friday evening a distant dream.

I wanted to be able to control my day, not have to rush breakfast to then navigate through traffic to get to work on time, spend my day in meetings, the majority of which were not productive and then come home for a few hours to enjoy with the people I wanted to spend it with. When I found my current training course I was surprised (and sceptical at first) at how quickly I got involved, it didn’t feel like work because I enjoyed doing it. I thought to myself ‘is this what I have been missing out on the whole time?’. If I could feel like this every day I wouldn’t dread ‘work’ anymore. You can find out how I got started on my about page but I’d like to focus on you and what is your main goal for your working life?

This isn’t to make you feel negative about where you are currently at as it is also important to focus on how far you have come, and not just how far you have to go.

It’s just to get you thinking about the long term, what’s the next step and what can you do to maximise your happiness – after all we only live once!

It doesn’t mean finding that answer today – a light bulb moment doesn’t just come to us, but it never will unless we are open to finding it. You’re not going to master the rest of your life in one day. You just have to relax, master the day and then just keep doing that every day.

So next time your alarm goes off to signal that day at work, just take a second to imagine the alternative – waking up after a peaceful sleep, with no dread of the day ahead and to know the day is yours, to truly be able to invest in yourself, your goals and most of all your peace of mind!
